E71: Finding Relief During the Presidential Election In Case You are Feeling Incredibly Anxious

Anxiety around the upcoming presidential election is a common experience for many, fueled by a variety of stressors. These include increasing polarization, uncertainty about the political climate, concerns over election integrity, and the potential handling of future crises like pandemics. Added to this are the overwhelming effects of media coverage and the fear of civil unrest, which exacerbate feelings of tension. It’s essential to differentiate between acute anxiety, which is temporary and can be productive, and chronic anxiety, which can have long-term effects on physical and mental health. Chronic anxiety has been linked to increased risks of heart disease, gastrointestinal problems, and autoimmune conditions, highlighting the need for proactive management.

One way to manage election-related anxiety is by setting boundaries with media consumption. Limiting exposure to distressing news can help mitigate the constant activation of the stress response. Strategies include turning off your phone during certain hours, removing specific apps, or committing to checking the news at designated times. Another helpful practice is to notice how consuming certain types of content affects your emotions and adjust your habits accordingly. These boundaries can create the space needed for the mind and body to recover from the constant influx of information and emotional triggers.

 

Incorporating mindfulness practices is another effective way to cope. Simple activities like taking a two-minute break to focus on your breathing, doing a body scan, or listening to calming sounds like ocean waves can provide a much-needed reset. Even small moments spent outdoors or redirecting your attention to your surroundings can make a significant difference. Additionally, validating your emotions, whether they are fear, grief, or hopelessness, is essential. Acknowledging these feelings with self-compassion and understanding can help soothe your nervous system and pave the way for emotional healing. By taking these steps, you can build resilience and better navigate the challenges of this politically charged time.
